Amazingly, there exists a Wikipedia article on Japanese culture that is about vending machines, but not about panty vending machines: vendo.

Apparently this is pretty popular - one of my friends went to Japan and *accidentally* participated in vendo... but I guess if you think about it, the vending machine is where you're getting your beer, so it's not all that odd. your bartender is just a robot.
